Dax Meazell was introduced to the alpaca fiber while traveling through Bolivia in 1996. He saw rustic alpaca sweaters in the markets, ancient royal alpaca garments in the museums, as well as traditional alpaca textiles in daily use by the indigenous Andeans. Dax was curious why this unique fiber with many wonderful qualities and tremendous versatility was rarely seen in North America. In 1998, Dax decided that we needed more high quality, tasteful and affordable alpaca garments and textiles in the United States. He returned to Bolivia, and later to Peru, and began working with artisans and small manufacturers to produce such alpaca items. Instead of buying ready-made alpaca garments with questionable quality, fit, design and fiber content, Dax created his own designs and sourced pure alpaca yarn directly from reputable spinning mills. This ensured that his garments and textiles had a pleasing look, proper fit and, most importantly, excellent quality. In addition, by working directly with the textile artisans Dax was able to form long-term and mutually beneficial relationships with them, and support the principles of Fair Trade. Today, Dax continues this ethos to make high quality, useful and attractive alpaca garments and home textiles. These items regularly appear in high-end boutiques and department stores throughout the United States.
Dax Alpaca’s first retail store was opened in May 2003, in Friday Harbor, Washington, in order to present Dax Alpaca garments, fashion accessories and home textiles all under one roof. Our current retail store is located in Bellingham (Fairhaven), Washington.
